Tuna Melt

Buttery toasted bread, filled creamy tuna salad and gooey cheddar cheese! If you’re a fan of the tuna melt, this recipe is a must (it’s the best one ever)!

This is the best tuna melt you will ever make! I say this with confidence because I tested the recipe on my family and friends! And I think I added a nice balance of flavors and textures. Many tuna melt recipes call for relish or diced pickles in the filling. But, I used bell pepper relish which provides the same texture and tanginess, while adding a bit of color and sweetness. I also used everything bagel seasoning which adds garlic, onion, sesame seeds, and a great crunch!

This recipe is completely customizable. Even though I firmly believe this is the best tuna melt you will ever make, you can swap ingredients if desired. I used olive oil mayo, but you can use your favorite mayonnaise (including avocado and vegan). You can use diced pickles or pickle relish instead of bell pepper relish. You can swap steak seasoning in for the everything bagel seasoning, and you can use your favorite cheese – Swiss, American, and provolone also make great choices.

I used sprouted grainy bread for my tuna melts, but use what you want! The slices can be thick or thin, white or wheat, or any bread you like. Gluten-free bread works too!

This recipe is easy to double and triple! If you’re feeding a crowd (or want leftovers for lunch the next day), feel free to multiply the ingredients to suit your needs.

Tuna Melt
Ingredients
- 5 ounces tuna of choice, drained, I used Safe Catch wild tuna (which has the lowest mercury of any brand)
- 3 tablespoons mayonnaise of choice, or more/less to taste
- 1 tablespoon bell pepper relish, or pickle relish
- 1/2 teaspoon everything bagel seasoning, or steak seasoning
- 2 slices cheddar cheese, or 1/4 cup grated cheddar cheese
- 4 slices bread of choice
- Softened butter, or ghee
Instructions
- In a medium bowl, combine the tuna, mayonnaise, relish, and seasoning. Mix well.
- Preheat a large flat skillet or griddle over medium heat.
- Butter one side of each slice of bread. Flip the bread and top the unbuttered side with the tuna mixture. Top the tuna with the cheese. Place the second slice of bread on top, buttered-side-up.
- Transfer the sandwiches to the hot pan and cook until golden brown on both sides and the cheese melts.
