Ingredients

  • 2 teaspoons olive oil
  • 1 pound ground chicken
  • 1/2 cup chopped onion any color
  • 2 cloves garlic minced
  • 16 ounces 2 cups tomato sauce
  • 1/4 cup ketchup
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 tablespoon light or dark brown sugar
  • 1 teaspoon Dijon mustard or yellow mustard
  • 1 teaspoon dried basil
  • 1/2 teaspoon paprika
  • Salt and freshly ground black pepper
  • 4 hamburger buns toasted if desired

Instructions

  • Heat the oil in a large skillet or saucepan over medium-high heat. Add the chicken and cook until no longer pink, breaking up the meat as it cooks.
  • Add the onion and garlic and cook for 3 to 5 minutes, until the vegetables soften.
  • Add the tomato sauce, ketchup, Worcestershire sauce, brown sugar, mustard, basil, and paprika and bring to a simmer. Reduce the heat to low and simmer, uncovered, for 15 minutes, until the sauce thickens. Note, if the mixture thickens more than desired, add a little water. Season to taste with salt and black pepper.
  • Ladle the mixture onto buns and serve.
