This easy meal features juicy, pan-seared hamburger steaks in a satiny, caramelized onion gravy. Serve with rice or buttered noodles and you have the most comforting meal ever! And it couldn’t be easier to throw together.

What’s the difference between hamburger steaks and salisbury steak? Hamburger steaks are typically made with ground beef that’s seasoned with herbs and spices (and sometimes just salt and pepper). Salisbury steaks often have binders, like bread crumbs and egg. Hamburger steaks are gluten-free, ultra-moist, and extra-flavorful.

What should you serve with these hamburger steaks? I love to serve the patties and gravy with something to soak up the sauce, like buttered noodles, rice, mashed potatoes, or couscous. That said, you can choose your favorite grain, or simply serve with some warm bread. Add a veggie and/or salad and the meal is complete.

Hamburger Steaks in Gravy

This easy meal features juicy, pan-seared hamburger steaks in a satiny, caramelized onion gravy. Serve with rice or buttered noodles and you have the most comforting meal ever! And it couldn’t be easier to throw together.

Ingredients

  • 1 pound lean ground beef, I prefer 90% lean for these
  • 1 1/4 teaspoons onion powder, divided
  • 1 teaspoon ground mustard
  • 3/4 teaspoon garlic powder, divided
  • Salt and black pepper
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 1 small onion thinly sliced
  • 1 tablespoon butter
  • 2 tablespoons flour
  • 1 1/2 cups beef broth
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce

Instructions

  • In a large bowl, combine the beef, 1 teaspoon of onion powder, ground mustard, 1/2 teaspoon of the garlic powder, 1/2 teaspoon salt, and 1/4 teaspoon black pepper. Mix to combine, being careful not to over-mix.
  • Shape the mixture into 4 equal patties.
  • Heat the oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Add the hamburger steaks and cook for 4 minutes per side, until nicely browned on both sides. Transfer the hamburger steaks to a plate (they will finish cooking in the gravy).
  • Drain all but 1 tablespoon of grease from the pan and add the butter. When the butter has melted, add the onions to the pan and cook for 5 to 10 minutes, until soft and deeply browned. Add the flour and stir to coat.
  • Add the beef broth, remaining 1/4 teaspoon of onion powder, remaining 1/4 teaspoon of garlic powder, and Worcestershire sauce and bring to a simmer.
  • Return the hamburger steaks to the pan and simmer for 5 to 7 minutes, or until the meat is cooked to your liking. If you want the meat cooked all the way through, cook until 155 to 160 degrees F.
