Bananas Foster

This delicious, flambéed dessert delivers rum-infused, caramelized bananas served with creamy vanilla ice cream. If you’ve been afraid to try bananas foster in your own kitchen, wait until you see how easy it is!

Don’t relegate Bananas Fosters to dining out! It’s so much fun to make the easy dessert at home. And you need a handful of ingredients!

The bananas in this dessert are so cozy and warm. That’s because they’re braised in a butter-sugar mixture that’s infused with vanilla and cinnamon. All pantry staples, and it’s a show-stopping dessert!

Igniting the rum is optional! The purpose of igniting the rum is to cook off the alcohol and reduce the liquid, which amplifies the rum’s nuances. That said, it’s optional. If you decide not to ignite the rum, simply simmer the mixture for about 1 minute before serving.

Bananas Foster
Ingredients
- 6 tablespoons unsalted butter, cut into pieces
- ½ cup light brown sugar
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- ½ teaspoon ground cinnamon
- Pinch of salt
- 3-4 ripe but firm bananas, peeled and sliced lengthwise, then crosswise
- ¼ cup dark rum
- Vanilla ice cream for serving
Instructions
- Melt the butter in a large skillet over medium heat.
- When the butter is bubbly, add the sugar, vanilla, cinnamon, and salt. Cook until the mixture is thick and bubbly, whisking constantly.
- Add the bananas to the pan, cut side down. Cook for 1 minute, until the bananas are lightly caramelized on the cut side. Use a spatula to flip the bananas over.
- Turn off the heat (this is important) and add the rum to the pan (the sauce should still be bubbling). Use a long-reach lighter or kitchen torch to ignite the sauce. Cook, shaking the pan, until the flame goes out. Note: Lighting the rum is optional.
- Transfer the bananas and sauce to dessert plates and serve with ice cream.
