Super smooth marinara, infused with parmesan, onion, garlic, and herbs, ladled over freshly cooked, tender pasta. This is the best marinara sauce my friends, and it comes together quickly and easily!
I adore this smooth sauce! It's not chunky because we don't use actual chopped-up vegetables (like onions and garlic). In this recipe, we use the dried and ground counterparts of those aromatic vegetables and the flavor is insane! Plus, you just need to raid the spice rack for this sauce!
I spiked my marinara sauce with parmesan cheese! The cheese not only adds a wonderful nuttiness, it helps thicken and enrich the sauce.
You can make this marinara sauce spicy. For a spicy sauce, add 1 teaspoon of crushed red pepper flakes when you add the dried herbs. You can also serve extra red pepper flakes at the table.
If you prefer creamy sauces, you can easily transform this sauce. This recipe is so versatile! If you prefer more cream-based sauces for your pasta, add 1/2 cup heavy cream to the sauce for the last 5 to 10 minutes of cooking.
I chose spaghetti but any pasta shape works! It's the sauce that's really the star of the show here, so use whatever pasta you have on hand, including whole wheat and gluten-free!
Serves 4
INGREDIENTS
28-ounce can tomato sauce
2 tablespoons grated parmesan cheese, plus more for serving
1 teaspoon dried basil
1 teaspoon dried oregano
1 teaspoon dried parsley
1/2 teaspoon onion powder
1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
Salt and freshly ground black pepper
1 pound spaghetti, or pasta of choice
Fresh basil for serving, optional
INSTRUCTIONS
In a medium saucepan, combine the tomato sauce, parmesan cheese, dried basil, oregano, parsley, onion powder, garlic powder, 1/2 teaspoon salt, and 1/4 teaspoon black pepper. Whisk to combine. Set the pan over medium heat and bring to a simmer. Reduce the heat to low, partially cover, and simmer for 20 to 30 minutes (and up to 1 hour). Season to taste with salt and black pepper.
Cook the pasta according to the package directions. Transfer the pasta to individual shallow bowls and top with marinara sauce. Top with fresh basil leaves and serve with parmesan cheese on the side.
