Equipment

Ingredients

  • 1 pound lean ground beef
  • 1 teaspoon chili powder
  • 1 teaspoon ground cumin
  • 1 teaspoon dried cilantro
  • 1/2 teaspoon paprika regular or smoked
  • 1/2 teaspoon onion powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder or granulated garlic
  • Salt and freshly ground black pepper
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil or vegetable oil
  • 3/4 cup salsa of choice
  • 1 cup shredded Mexican cheese or cheddar cheese, or cheese of choice

Instructions

  • In a large bowl, combine the beef, chili powder, cumin, cilantro, paprika, onion powder, garlic powder, 1/2 teaspoon salt, and 1/4 teaspoon black pepper. Mix well and shape the mixture into four equal patties, each about 1/2-inch thick.
  • Heat the oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Add the patties and cook for 2 to 3 minutes per side, until browned. Add the salsa and bring to a simmer. Reduce the heat to medium-low and simmer for 5 minutes, until the patties are cooked through. If the salsa seems to be reducing too quickly, add more salsa or partially cover the pan with a lid.
  • Top the patties with the cheese, cover the pan with foil or a lid and remove it from the heat. Let stand for 1 minute to melt the cheese.
