Salsa Salisbury Steaks

These beef patties are seasoned like tacos, seared like Salisbury steaks, simmered in salsa, and smothered in Mexican cheese. It’s like nothing you’ve ever had before. I think you’ll be making it again and again.

This is such an amazing twist on Salisbury steaks!
Most recipes for Salisbury steaks feature seared beef patties, mushrooms, onions, and gravy. An easy, comforting, affordable dish. Since the classic dish is so well-loved, I decided to spice things up with a Mexican twist! And wait until you try this – it’s so fun! Reminiscent of Salisbury steaks, but so much better.

The ingredient list for these salsa Salisbury steaks is short, and you can make it even shorter. I seasoned the beef with some pantry-staple herbs and spices, but if you’re in a rush or in short supply, you can replace all of those herbs/spices with 2 teaspoons of store-bought taco seasoning (the powdered mix).

How should you serve your salsa Salisbury steaks?
I served roasted potato wedges alongside, and it was fantastic. The potatoes dipped into the sauce a little and it was fabulous. I think a side of fluffy rice would also be great; and the grains will also soak up the delicious, cheesy sauce.

You can make this dish spicy if you want. Add some heat by using hot salsa or hot sauce. You can also use hot chili powder instead of regular chili powder. For a smokier dish, use smoked paprika.

What type of salsa should you use?
Your favorite brand! I used our favorite “medium heat” salsa that boasts onions, bell peppers, garlic, tomatoes, cilantro, green chilies, and a mild amount of heat. Use any salsa you prefer and you can transform the dish into something completely customized.

- 1 pound lean ground beef
- 1 teaspoon chili powder
- 1 teaspoon ground cumin
- 1 teaspoon dried cilantro
- 1/2 teaspoon paprika, regular or smoked
- 1/2 teaspoon onion powder
- 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder or granulated garlic

Equipment
Instructions
- In a large bowl, combine the beef, chili powder, cumin, cilantro, paprika, onion powder, garlic powder, 1/2 teaspoon salt, and 1/4 teaspoon black pepper. Mix well and shape the mixture into four equal patties, each about 1/2-inch thick.
- Heat the oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Add the patties and cook for 2 to 3 minutes per side, until browned. Add the salsa and bring to a simmer. Reduce the heat to medium-low and simmer for 5 minutes, until the patties are cooked through. If the salsa seems to be reducing too quickly, add more salsa or partially cover the pan with a lid.
- Top the patties with the cheese, cover the pan with foil or a lid and remove it from the heat. Let stand for 1 minute to melt the cheese.
