Ingredients

  • 1/4 cup tamari sauce or soy sauce, or liquid aminos, or coconut aminos
  • 1/4 cup water
  • 3 tablespoons brown sugar light or dark
  • 1 tablespoon mirin Japanese rice wine, or Shauxing (Chinese rice wine)
  • 1 tablespoon cornstarch
  • 2 teaspoons sesame oil
  • 1 pound lean ground beef
  • 2 cloves garlic minced, or 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 teaspoon minced fresh ginger or 1/4 teaspoon ground ginger
  • Salt and freshly ground black pepper

For Serving

  • Cooked rice or Asian noodles or lettuce leaves
  • Everything bagel seasoning

Instructions

  • In a small bowl, whisk together the tamari sauce, water, brown sugar, mirin, cornstarch, and sesame oil. Set aside.
  • Brown the beef in a large skillet over medium-high heat, breaking up the meat as it cooks. Stir in the garlic and ginger and cook for 1 minute, until fragrant.
  • Add the tamari sauce mixture and bring to a simmer. Reduce the heat to medium-low and simmer for 2 to 3 minutes, until the sauce thickens and reduces. Season to taste with salt and black pepper.
  • Spoon the beef over rice/noodles (or in lettuce leaves) and sprinkle with everything bagel seasoning.
